chapter 5: MODAL VERBS: SHOULD (GIVING ADVICE)

  • The modal SHOULD is used to give advice to someone.
          EX:    Should  I buy a bicycle or a motorcycle?
                    I think you should buy a bicycle.
  • The modal SHOULD is an auxiliary verb that combines with the base form of the verb. It doesnt contract with subject pronouns.

          AFFIRMATIVE SENTENCE:
       Subject    +     should   +   base        +     ___________________.
       pronoun                           verb

         EX: I should buy a new car, my old car is not working right anymore.
         NEGATIVE SENTENCE:

       Subject    +     should   +  NOT   +   base        +     ________________.
       pronoun            (SHOULDN´T)          verb

          EX: I shouldn´t buy a new car, my old car still works right
       QUESTION FORM:
       
         Should              +      subject            +       base        +   _________ ?
                                        pronoun                     verb

              EX: Should I buy a new car?
       SHORT ANSWER:
   
       Yes, + subject pronoun+should      No,+subject pronoun+shouldn´t
          
          Yes, I should                                No, I shouldn´t
