CHAPTER 9: PAST CONTINUOUS TENSE, REFLEXIVE PRONOUNS AND WHILE CLAUSES

PAST CONTINUOUS TENSE  (S.B. p. 84    W.B. pp 81-83)

  • The past continuous tense describes an activity that was in progress at a specific time in the past.
  • It is usually combined with a simple past clause to describe what action was in progress (past continuous) when an event that interrupted the action, happened (simple past).
Examples:     Susan was reading the newspaper when the lights went out.
Tom was taking the bus when I saw him.

PAST CONTINUOUS TENSE

WHILE -  CLAUSES WITH THE PAST CONTINUOUS TENSE
(S.B. p. 88-89       wb   p. 87-90)

  • While is commonly used to introduce a clause in the past continuous tense. Although when can be substituted in its place, while emphazises the duration of an activity.
          Examples:
I lost my wallet while I was jogging.
(During the time I was jogging, I lost my wallet)

He cut himself while he was shaving.
(During the time he was shaving, he cut himself)

Use the Past Continuous to indicate that a longer action in the past was interrupted. The interruption is usually a shorter action in the Simple Past. Remember this can be a real interruption or just an interruption in time.
Examples:
  • I was watching TV when she called.
  • When the phone rang, she was writing a letter.
  • While we were having the picnic, it started to rain.
  • What were you doing when the earthquake started?
  • I was listening to my iPod, so I didn't hear the fire alarm.
  • You were not listening to me when I told you to turn the oven off.
  • While John was sleeping last night, someone stole his car.
  • Sammy was waiting for us when we got off the plane.
  • While I was writing the email, the computer suddenly went off.
  • A: What were you doing when you broke your leg?
    B: I was snowboarding.

REFLEXIVE PRONOUNS

A reflexive pronoun is a special kind of pronoun. It is usually used when the object of a sentence is the same as the subject. Each personal pronoun has its own reflexive form.

Subject pronoun                          Reflexive Pronoun

                 I                                              myself

             You                                              yourself
               He                                              himself
              She                                             herself
                 it                                              itself

              They                                            themselves

When to use a reflexive pronoun

Reflexive pronouns are used in three main situations.
  1. Reflexive pronouns are used when the subject and object are the same.

    I hurt myself.
    The band call themselves “Shinedown”.
    He shot himself.
  2. They are used as the object of a preposition, when the subject and the object are the same.

I bought a present for myself.
She did it by herself. (She did it alone.)
That man is talking to himself.
  3. They are used when you want to emphasize the subject.

I'll do it myself. (No one else will help me.)
They ate all the food themselves. (No one else had any.)
